Committed Listener Groups and Media Participation in Francophone West Africa

Abstract

Participation is one of the major features of contemporary culture. It extends beyond the media domain where it is in vogue, as witnessed by the many studies of the subject in recent years highlighting the commitment of media publics. This article applies the sociology of collective action and participative communication to present and analyze the forms of action observable in listener groups developing around radio stations in Francophone West Africa.

Etienne Damome, Bordeaux Montaigne University

Etienne DAMOME is a Senior Lecturer with the responsibility of directing PHD research in information and communication sciences at Bordeaux Montaigne University.He works on African media in general, but more often on broadcasting. His analyzes on several topics of the report media, cultures and societies: radio stations and religions;proximity radio stations and reconfiguration of public space; radio stations and local languages; media, new technologies and society.Recent publications include Radios and Religions in Sub-Saharan Africa. Dynamism, competition, social action, Pessac: Presses Universitaires de Bordeaux, 2014, 319 p. and Community Radio Practices and Dynamics for Young People in the Digital Age, Réseaux (33-194 / 2015), 229-263.
